In Hondeklip Bay the wind blows 340 days of the year!
The difference between winter and summer daytime temperatures is
minor.
Average daytime temperature: Summer 24ºC Winter 17ºC
Average night time temperature: Summer 15ºC Winter 7ºC
Bergwinds (easterly weather) occurs regularly during the winter and
spring months. Temperatures of up to 45ºC may occur and cause
devastation of the annual wild flower display.
It will occasionally rain between April and Augustus.
This coastal region is a sparsely populated semi-desert environment.
Rainfall is low, occurs mostly in winter, averaging less than 100 mm
annually.
Some moisture is also derived from coastal fog.
Strong southerly winds prevail and cause up-welling of cold, nutrient-rich
seawater to the surface, accounting for the high biological productivity of
the marine environment.
The area is characterised by sandy soils that support sparse, scrubby
strandveld vegetation, which is adapted to extreme temperatures and
limited moisture, but is sensitive to disturbance.
Agricultural potential is poor, but the unusual succulent vegetation and
annual wild flower display are important assets of the area.
